ERODE: Textile Traders Federation of Erode has decided not to pullshutters down on July 2. The joint action council oftextile-related associations, led by PDEXCIL chairman M SMadhivanan, had called for a state-wide strike on July 2 demandingthat the Centre and State Governments check yarn price, ban wastecotton export, streamline power supply, increase cotton productionand regulate cotton export.

Federation president R S Nataraja Mudaliar said, We support thestir, but have decided not to close units as similar stirs heldbefore on May 16 and June 10 went in vain.

He said the federation would take part in the rally and publicmeetings that would be held at the Erode VOC Park on that day.

Increase in yarn price is a temporary phenomenon, the majorproblem we face is pollution. Due to stern actions of TNPCB,textile processing units like dyeing, bleaching, calendaring andprinting are in deep crisis. The textile sector cannot survivewithout these units, he pointed out. This has led to the closureof many units as installing and operating a Reverse Osmosis Plant(ROP) requires high investment, he said.

More than two lakh people depend on the textile sector. TheCentral and State Governments should take steps to protect it bysetting up Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs), he added.
